Quickly adjusting to a new environment and improving their skills he was named the NBA Rookie of the Month in April 1988. In 1994, he was selected to play with the United States national team in the 1994 FIBA World Championship.

During 1997-98 he retired from the NBA but came back in 1999 to replace the injured Jason Kidd during the playoff run. Then he retired from the NBA.

While he was in the NBA, he founded a nonprofit development corporation St. Hope (Helping Others Pursue Excellence) as an afterschool program for kids in California.

Johnson established the Kevin Johnson Corporation which operates several subsidiary organizations specializing in real estate development and management, sports management, and business acquisition.

He was elected as mayor of Sacramento, California in 2008 and again reelected in 2012. He became the first African-American to serve in that office.
